The Machine

April 6, 2010

I just read the ‘Wired 13.08: We Are the Web’ article and it was so interesting I forwarded it to family and friends. At the same time, though, I found it kind of terrifying. Especially:

‘This planet-sized computer is comparable in complexity to a human brain. Both the brain and the Web have hundreds of billions of neurons (or Web pages). Each biological neuron sprouts synaptic links to thousands of other neurons, while each Web page branches into dozens of hyperlinks. That adds up to a trillion “synapses” between the static pages on the Web. The human brain has about 100 times that number – but brains are not doubling in size every few years. The Machine is.’

Isn’t that terrifying?? I can just imagine a movie where the internet has begun to think:

It decides to ‘fix’ all our human problems by becoming a supreme, universal judge and dealing out punishments accordingly. (It is linked up with military equipment all over the world and can hijack control at will.) It bases it’s judgements on all the news articles, blogs and media coverage online. The only way to stop it is to destroy all computers!!!

I’d go and see that.
